Polaroid Stories by Naomi Iizuka
Directed by Lester Mayers
Sharp Theater
November 15-23, 2024
Trigger Acknowledgement: This show portrays real-life experiences involving abuse, drug use, domestic violence, the unhoused,聽and sex work.聽The language of the play reflects the extremity of these experiences and is sometimes graphic.聽We want to stress that we have made sure support resources are easily accessible for anyone who may be triggered or impacted by these themes.聽
A visceral blend of classical mythology and real-life stories told by street kids, Iizuka鈥檚 award-winning play journeys into a dangerous world where myth-making fulfills a fierce need for transcendence, where storytelling has the power to transform a reality in which characters鈥 lives are continually threatened, devalued, and effaced. Inspired in part by Ovid鈥檚 Metamorphoses, Polaroid Stories depicts modern-day mortals engulfed by needs that burn and consume with lyricism and great theatrical force.

His聽group Loud Objects makes electronic聽music visible, soldering sound circuits from scratch on stage while an antique overhead projector displays their actions to the audience.

Kalanidhi Dance, an ensemble rooted in the classical Indian style of Kuchipudi, will present their exquisite piece, Bhoomi. Connection and balance play a central role in Bhoomi, which means 鈥渆arth鈥 in Sanskrit. Framed by the portrayal of the five natural elements – space, air, fire, water, and earth – the work depicts the evolution of humanity鈥檚 connection to these fundamental aspects of the earth鈥檚 existence. It asks why and how have we gotten to this point and what might we do to slow this course we have laid for ourselves?
The work unfolds in front of projected images of paintings by award-winning artist Shanthi Chandrasekhar and lush designs from Dylan Uremovich. India-based music composer Praveen Rao provides a sweeping and innovative original score.
